HARLEM CULTURAL FESTIVAL FOUNDATION + DESIGN CHALLENGE •

Harlem Cultural Festival Foundation partnered with Steve Madden to launch the Design Challenge which provided Harlem based designers with access to mentorship, industry knowledge, and career pathways in fashion. The challenge winner, DaQuane Cherry, received a $10,000 cash prize and a paid 3-month Fellowship with Steve Madden, Ltd to produce a 3-piece collection showcasing his winning entry.

DaQuane Cherry, the winner of our inaugural DESIGN challenge, received a $10,000 cash prize and a prestigious three-month paid fellowship with Steve Madden, Ltd. daquane WAS PROVIDED the opportunity to work with the Steve Madden design team to produce a 3-piece collaboration showcasing his winning entry, AND gainING invaluable experience in The fashion industry.

MEET THE FINALISTS

Harlem Cultural Festival Foundation partnered with Steve Madden to launch a Design Challenge in winter/spring 2023.

In January 2023, applicants were provided the opportunity to submit graphic design artwork to be printed on a 3-piece collection - a boot, denim jacket and belt bag. During the two-tiered evaluation process, applicants were narrowed down to five finalists. Finalists were invited to visit Steve Madden’s Long Island City based Corporate Headquarters and Shoe Factory, as well as the company’s New York City-based retail store and show rooms.

Finalists presented their design concepts at the Design Challenge Finale event on March 8, 2023 at Harlem School of the Arts. A Selection Committee – including Steve Madden executives, HCFF Co-Founder Musa Jackson, and Harlem-based fashion experts – selected the winner to receive a cash prize of $10,000 plus a paid 3-month Fellowship with Steve Madden, Ltd.
